Coming Soon… is a solo performance by Soraya Leila on pleasure, desire, and the female gaze, premiering in March 2026 at Tanzhaus Zürich.
The work is a continuation of Soraya Leila's previous choreographic work on female pleasure and the maturation of the initial research Odalisque: My Body in Private Spaces, initiated in 2020 at Tanzquartier Wien.
Inspired by La Grande Odalisque painted by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, Coming Soon is a reclamation and subversion of this iconic figure, challenging the traditional male gaze that shaped her depiction rather than reproducing it. Motivated by the desire to shift the narrative from one of passivity and objectification to one of agency, subjectivity and self-representation. Who gets to tell the story?
La Grande Odalisque. There she is, languidly waiting on a couch in a luxurious harem setting. The odalisque — the idealized, sensual image of a woman. A passive, desirable object waiting to be consumed. Who is she? In her stillness, there is a longing. What is she waiting for in this confined space? The solo centers around embodying the imagination and fantasies of this fantasized figure, about her pleasure in longing, waiting, and anticipation. Her yearning for it all to happen again — her slow, simmering desire that builds quietly over time. The question here is: what or who is coming soon? Is there something coming at all?
