The Space In Between is a biographical dance performance exploring through movement 'the space between two', continuing the exploration from her earlier research Odalisque: My Body in Private Sapces, conducted at Tanzquartier Wien in 2020.
A real or fictitious space, built or memorized, halfway between Africa and Europe, between Morocco and Switzerland, at the intersection of two cultures, between two beings, between a mother and her daughter. A space for dialogue between mother and daughter: between the dancer and choreographer Soraya Leila born and raised in Switzerland and her mother Mina, a Moroccan who arrived in Switzerland in 1989.
Together, through movement, they offer an experience that questions the preservation and transmission of cultural identity across generations as well as the complexity of cultural identity. How do you pass on cultural heritage to your children in a culture that is new? How do you naviguate your identity across different cultures and preserve the heritage you have inherited? What are the difficulties or the victories encountered by one and the other?
The Space In Between offers a moment of intergenerational and intercultural dialogue and reflection. A performance that tries to understand, through dance gestures, this indefinite space that the two women nourish from their personal experiences and their strong bond.
